One of the great things about any garden is the level of unpredictability inherent in the planting of a planned bed. Our veggie garden this year is no different as we discovered that not all of the plants being cultivated among the varieties of tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers growing in our 12'x5' urban garden, were part of the plan Anne and I had in mind. There are both "mystery" and "rogue" vegetable, both of which have appeared courtesy of the compost we have been gently preparing in our pit over the last twelve months. All the plant seeds, skins and guts that have been mixed in seem to have been lying in wait for the opportunity to germinate!
During the green explosion that has occurred over the past four weeks a few surprises have appeared; surprises that are not readily identifiable as "weeds," or plants which will develop desirable fruit. It seems as though some unplanned for guests have come to stay with the Lady Bells, Purple Beauties, Romas and Golden California Wonder. The "rogues" (as pictured to the left) are easier to identify: tomato plants which have been spawned from the kitchen waste. Determining exactly what variety of tomato is more of a "wait-and-see" game, as the size and color of the fruit which would eventually grow will give us many more easily observable clues.
The "mystery" vegetables (pictured at the top of the post) are those unplanned plants which have appeared that are not so easily identifiable. While it is certain that they are NOT tomatoes or peppers, Anne has figured out that they are some sort of squash-gourd type plant, but exactly what type? We are not exactly certain, but await further developments that may offer more clues...
