Bruegger’s Bagel 5k

Run 1: 3.1 miles in :19:08 min. @ 9:30 a.m.

Pace: 6:10 min./per mile avg.
Weather: Rain, 64°F
Course: Bruegger’s Bagel 5k Course

Pre-Race Observations: Following yesterday’s 14.5 miles, I’m not sure how smart it is to “race” today, but the fast course was too seductive to resist. In years past, I have run this race with one of my kids, so I haven’t had the chance to run the course for a legitimate time. Unfortunately, this year everyone (“everyone” being my son, daughter and stepson) is participating on their schools’ respective cross-country teams, so after a busy week of training, have Sunday as a scheduled “recovery day,” so won’t be running with the old man. My two kids, however, are planning on coming with me… it’s pretty we out right this minute so I’m not sure how that will play out.

I am scheduled to run 8 miles today, so with roughly 3.5 covered by my warm-ups and race this morning, I’ll need to do the balance (preferably later this evening) before having a planned “recovery day.”

Post-Run Reflections: Although the rain was steady the weather, in general, was nearly perfect for a 5k. As I feared, the rain kept my kids at home (at my suggestion... no need for them to get sick!), which was really a shame as I ran so well. While I failed to break through the 19 minute wall, I did PR by finishing the distance in 19:08, an improvement of 4 seconds. It may seem like a small change (and it is), but I am happy to continue inching towards my goal of :18:59.

In the end I finished eighth overall and second in my age group (M35-39), benefiting in both cases by the much larger MADD Dash 5k that was being run elsewhere this morning...

Run 2: 5.4 miles in :49:35 min. @ 6:30 p.m.

Pace: 9:11 min./per mile avg.
Weather: Fog and Rain, 65°F
Course: From Main Street, Pittsford, to Lock 32 and back twice

Breathe in, breathe out... YOU AND I ARE ALIVE!
