Trail Run 1: 7 miles in 1:15:00 min. @ 8:00 a.m.

Pace: 10:42 min./per mile avg.
Weather: Partly Cloudy and Damp, 51°F
Course: Old Rifle Range Trail

While not quite the twenty(!) miles I had planned on running this morning, it was great to get some time in on the same surface I will be (hopefully) running the ultra-marathon in five short weeks. My trail of choice today was the familiar hills of the Old Rifle Range Trail, which is part of the Ellison Park Wetlands in Monroe County.

When I woke of this morning, my thought was to run five complete loops of the course, but given my somewhat limited time farme due to all three kids running in today's McQuaid Invitational, as well as my desire to spend some time with my wife beforehand, I was only able to fit in a little over two complete.

As in previous visits, I stayed with the white and yellow flashes, following a course which is becoming more familiar with each run, despite some changes in the area due mostly to felled trees. The terrain itself was challenging with quite a few steep climbing hills and sharp down turns. I find myself focusing on pace and concentrating on moving over the roots and divets in an effort to avoid injury. What little area was not below the canopy of trees was moist with early morning dew. The majority of of trail below the trees was enclosed in cool air, which kept the trails fairly dry and "slip free".

Breathe in, breathe out... YOU AND I ARE ALIVE!
