Music Monday: "The Eagle & The Hawk"

"Come dance with the west wind and touch on the mountain tops,
Sail o'er the canyons and up to the stars,
And reach for the heavens and hope for the future,
And all that we can be and not what we are."

Lately I've found myself (once again) listening to John Denver's Greatest Hits in my car during my travels from here to there. Something in his voice, lyrics and music is so organic and "real."

Though "The Eagle and The Hawk" has not always been one of my go to JD songs, after giving it a second try today, it is moving its way up the list. Like all great music , I suppose, his lyrics are truly like poetry, though not in the same way that that every rapper or pop artist who lands a hit on the charts thinks themselves "a poet."

His sens of space, community, nature and humanity, as evidenced in his lyrics, mark Denver as a sincere, simple poet who happened to also be insanely talented at crafting melody to go with his words. Though it is sad that he is gone, he left so much wisdom and joy in his music behind that I think will likely outlive all of us.

Breathe in, breathe out… YOU AND I ARE ALIVE!
