Community Building, Muscle Building

NOTE: About three months ago I wrote a letter to my local newspaper in which the seeds for my previous blog Earth House Hold were planted. When I first published it on that blog I noted that I hadn't noticed the thematic similiarity until I had re-read it. It now seems to fit in here, as well.

Here's a taste:
One thing to appreciate about community running events, like the Boilermaker and those closer to home such as the Lilac 10K or Fairport Firecracker, is that regardless of an individual's shape, size or speed, all participants are welcome. Those who are unable to run or walk in an event take on some of the most important roles: volunteering or cheering on their relatives or neighbors. Just as it should be in everyday community life, everybody counts.
