4.75 mi. in :39:07 min. @ 10:00 a.m.

Heart Monitor Data: 584 cals, 86% MHR avg., 93% MHR max.

Weather Report: Fair, 83°F, 62% Humidity, Winds: SSW @ 9 mph; feels like 86°F.

It was as my legs were firmly encased in cement and I could not see becuase due to the sweat and water mix was stinging my eyes that I thought of Colorado. Many questions came to mind as I squinted to see the oncoming cars, while trying to hug the side of the road:

If I was suffering and in such pain running here in River City, New York, what the heck kind of meteoroligical greeting can I expect in Colorado? How could I make it with the dramatic shift in altitiude? Why does my right knee hurt NOW--only after a relatively easy hike up and down Mt. Arab? And most importantly: what can I do between today and August 11 to save myself from an embarrassing performance (not to mention Saturday's 10k)?

This was planned as the first of two shorter runs today, and while I am aware of the high temp, I am using it as a chnace to challenge the lements vailable to me. I really struggled with this low pace run to finish the short distance I did. Just by checking today's weather in Fort Collins below, it is easy to see that the temps are not my problem (today), but the elevations I will be facing and the challenge of breathing.

Today's weather info for Fort Collins, Colorado, the site of the Wild West Relay start that I wil be participating in during the second weekend of August:
Weather Report: Fair, 72°F, 60% Humidity, Winds: NE @ 6 mph; feels like 72°F.

I've popped an Advil and will ice my knee(s) later before giving the second half of my training day a shot by, in all likelihood, doing a shorter, VERY SLOW trot. I'm really feeling the need to do some track/speed work before Saturday's race, but that will have to wait until tomorrow... (come to think of it, speed work may be the only way to improve my breathing economy... hmmm)

Breathe in, breathe out... YOU AND I ARE ALIVE!
