The worm "sign," or smell, was very strong as I traipsed through the rain drops. My olfactory (nose) memory reminded me that this was a seminal smell of my childhood; walking to school in the rain and standing on the lawn in an effort to evade my greatest fears and avoid seeing or stepping on worms...(?) My older, smarter brain told me that with worms, often, hungry birds follow, looking for a snack.
One Northern Cardinal.
One American Goldfinch.
One American Crow.
Many American Tree Sparrows.
These are just a few of the birds I could identify as I was running through the light rain late this morning. As I have settled in over the last twenty-four hours and am finally shaking my "axel-lag," following the previous two plus days in the Prius, I feel myself being drawn back to birding. I missed the familiarity of the birds I know here in the Flower City.
As thrilling as it was to see many similiar, and unique, birds across our country (it makes the world seem somehow smaller--as if that is possible!) there is that something about being home. Particularly special, is being in that shared space with neighbor birds with whom I am vaguely familiar.
Breathe in, breathe out... YOU AND I ARE ALIVE!
