High School Track Meet: WASH'D OUT!

Weather Report: Light Rain, 42°F, 78% Humidity, Winds: From SSE @ 20 mph, gusting to 24 mph; feels like 36°F.

My daughter, Jordyn's first varsity high school track meet was scheduled to take place this morning, and despite the terribly cold and wet weather, the all-comers style meet began at 10:00 with the 100m hurdles. I arrived on time, touched base with my daughter who informed me that her events (400m and 800m) wouldn't be taking place until the middle and towards the end of the meet. I enjoy wathcing track meets, so that didn't dissuade me from sticking around and soaking in the ambiance (and rain).

After about 45 min. it became obvious that the meet could not continue, or at least, that my daughter's school would not continue to participate in it. Unfortunately, Jordyn didn't get to run this morning as the team decided to withdraw following the boys 1600m run, and go board the bus to return to their own school. Tired and wet, Jordyn seemed happy with the coaches decision, although she had been looking forward to the meet. I reminded her that there is always next week...

I did manage to snap a few weather related photos. Nearly all of the schools at the meet were from the suburbs, including my daughter's, and it was weird to notice how many of those suburban schools were able to set up tent cities (like that pictured below) within which to house and dry their athletes and equipment. I went to a city school and we never had anything like that. Judging from what I could observe, neither do those city kids, today, have that common courtesy available to them.

You can't fault most fans and athletes for taking refuge from the rain beneath the awning of the closed concession stand. There was coffee and food available for purchase in another concession stand.

Again, there's always next week...

Breathe in, breathe out... YOU AND I ARE ALIVE!
