"If you want to win something, run 100 meters. If you want to experience something, run a marathon."~Emil ZatopekAfter reviewing some of my "Week In Reviews" from this past January and February, I was disappointed to notice that my overall mileage has not dramatically increased since then. Other than my injury in late March-early April, and ongoing achiness, I'm not sure what to attribute this lack of growth to, except maybe a lack of focus. I know enough not to compare myself to others, but as I look at the running blogs it is frustrating to see the success documented there and not feel disappointed in myself. But enough of this feeling sorry for myself garbage!
When I spoke with Anne about my perceived mileage stagnation, she said "who cares?" Which got me thinking, "why doe sit matter?" As I said to Anne in response, I guess it only matters because I want to see some change or growth... the only measure for a quantitative improvement is increased distance. On the brighter side, I have definitely experienced a qualitative improvement in my aerobic capacity. One pattern I've picked up on relative to the races I've registered for is that most of them are shorter distance races, the overwhelming majority being 5ks. Rather than registering for a 5k each week, I'm going to be more selective in choosing competitive runs at distances no less than 5 miles, with an eye toward trail runs when possible.
Mileage-wise, this was another solid, standard, training week similar to all those weeks logged from January to March. Let's take a quickie look at what went down this week:
Legend: R = Running, R(T) = Running on Treadmill, w/A (with Anne), E = Easy Pace, and I've also noted increases (+x) or decreases (-x) from the previous week)Things change pretty dramatically next week as my Summer Break begins, so I will have both more time to train, but also more time to sit around, vegetate, and EAT... UGH!
Monday: R 3.8 miles (Weight: 190 lbs.)
Tuesday: R 6.75 miles
Wednesday: R(T) 3.5 miles
Thursday: R 6.1 miles (2 runs--5.7+1.3(E))
Friday: Off Day
Saturday: R 11.3 miles
Sunday: R w/A 1.6 miles (E)
TOTALS--R 33.05 miles (-/+NA miles)
Breathe in, breathe out... YOU AND I ARE ALIVE!
