Daucus carota, bishop's lace,
Queen Anne's lace, Bird's Nest,
Wild carrot.
Unnoticed and abundant,
bathing together in sunshine.
among browning trail grasses.
Grasped where the stem clings to the ground
and PULLED--
(hurry! safe for eating only when young)--
bitter white root...
Quickly,
before they're too woody to eat.
I collect an armful of wild carrots
with my brother's help,
one after another dislodged from the earth.
We'll hit the road, he and I,
on our merry way with only this weedy flesh
to keep our bellies full...
Too late!
Called back to our parents' car,
left behind,
the carrots posses
the greater calling
to wildness
that day.
Breathe in, breathe out... YOU AND I ARE ALIVE!
