Yesterday in my local fish wrap there was an article entitled "Small 'urban poultry' movement has residents raising chickens from scratch," detailing how some city residents have taken to raising chickens (the online blog is available here.) This was exciting news to me as I had been under the (mistaken) impression that it was not legal to raise chickens in urban areas due to their status as livestock.
Surprisingly (to me, anyway) there appears to be a movement of sorts, related to the sustainability wave sweeping certain groups, to promote the earth-friendly practice of having folks raise and maintain their own chickens for eggs. There are a number of sites with answers to questions such as Backyard Chickens.com and the Just Food organization's site, The City Farms both of which you can get more information about getting started...
Now to convince my wife that I am willing to build a coop and care for the birds!
Breathe in, breathe out… YOU AND I ARE ALIVE!

We have a chicken coop (in Adelaide, capital of South Australia, mind you), right in the middle of the burbs. Granted, there's no rooster, just three hens, so we get around 17 eggs per week.
More than enough for the three of us, and enough to give to our neighbours as well, which is a nice thing to do.
I got four baby chicks two weeks ago and am loving them!
kath--seventeen eggs per week sound like just the right amount for us! probably the best reason i might want a rooster (and a LOUD one) is to keep a neighbor or two on the point... heck, we're up at the crack of dawn anyway!
denise--congrats on your happy birds! i can understand your affection for the birds... i've always appreciated birds from afar (as a VERY basic watcher) but am excited at the possibility of one day raising chickens that would actually contribute to the foods my family eats...
thanks for commenting ;)
