A beautiful Fall Veteran's Day without work, leaving plenty of time for family, running and (most importantly) remembering. In addition to honoring the sacrifices of our many United States military veteran's, the memory closest to me is that of my late grandfather, a Marine Corps veteran of World War II, who has been gone for fifteen years now this past November 1.

Though I myself never served in the military, truthfully, for many my age, the call to service in this particular way was not as strong (or attractive), I do draw great pride from his service (as well as, that of my father who had served in the U.S. Army during the mid-1960's) and feel comfort in recalling the times in which my Baba shared with my brother and I the stories of his landing in Iwo Jima.

With my baba, my brother and I felt protected--and just as he wrapped and held us in his arms, I can't help but recalling how he felt embraced by our country, which, like many of his generation, he really loved this country and respected what it stood (stands?) for...
