Winter Diversion 2: Graphic Novels Comic Books

“The comic book [is] the marijuana of the nursery,
the bane of the bassinet, the horror of the home,
the curse of the kids and a threat to the future.”
~John Mason Brown

Sometimes it is easier and more sincere to call a "duck" a "duck," rather than thinking it a swan, so it is with no shame that I unabashedly confess (again) my appreciation for the artistry and entertainment of comic books, my second key winter diversion.

While, in the interest of full disclosure, I have previously admitted that this is more a a year round "activity" on my part, it has been this cold, cold winter that I have found myself more frequently following the misadventures of my favorite characters rather than venturing out into the night for a run.

On a number of occasions I have found myself staying in to organize (or RE-organize) my collection (sometimes by publisher, sometimes by title or sometimes by "event") or bagging and back-boarding the latest additions to my already swollen library of comics.

Though I would imagine not quite on the level of "marijuana," as mentioned in the quote above, collecting comic books has certainly been a lifelong addiction with which I have struggled. But, alas, not too hard. Some titles and characters, such as the fabulous Fantastic Four (the first issue of which I bought with my own money is pictured), I have been following for nearly twenty-five years, while others, I simply pick-up at random times up simply because I am a fan of the artist, writer or creator.

Either, this cold winter has been made just a little warmer through this very literate diversion.

Embrassez votre été invincible!
