Howdy, Red Laughing Buddha!

Some standard Zen artifacts or statures have become so common that many (including myself) have lost sight of what significance they are intended to communicate... if any. Perhaps the most common visitor to many Zen altars, including my own "homemade" one, the Red Robe Laughing Buddha (or "RLB"). RLB is depicted standing on gold treasure coins, and wearing the Red Robe. He overcomes sadness, obstacles and provides one with a smooth ride and happiness throughout the year--as opposed to sorrowness.

As pictured to the right above, RLB is often shown carrying a gold ingot in his left hand and large Chinese coins in his right to signify great cashflow and income. Behind him is a large wealth bag containing treasures. He also has peaches (recognized as "the fruit of immortality") and the calabash that helps to keep sickness at bay and enhance one's health. Around his neck are the mala bead that would dissipate all negativities. Along with the mala beads, there is a special jewel that would bring you good luck.

The Laughing Buddha brings happiness, riches and wealth into homes and especially depicted in... (wait for it...) RED.

Breathe in, breathe out... YOU AND I ARE ALIVE!
