Music Monday: Why'd You Come In Here Lookin' Like That?

"Why'd you come in here lookin' like that
When you could stop traffic in a gunney sack
Why you're almost givin' me a heart attack
When you waltz right in here lookin' like that
Why'd you come in here lookin' like that."

As briefly alluded to in this morning's (Sunday) post about my long run, I had what on the surface appeared to be a pretty poor day on Saturday. You know the drill: sick parent, lots of driving around, speeding ticket... the usual stuff. I recognize some folks have much bigger problems than that so I'm not complaining too much.

At any rate, I sat down last night to check out the television for something anything of interest to watch and eventually settled on Larry King Live (if that doesn't give you a sense as to the tv wasteland, nothing will) and he was chatting with Dolly Parton. Though I've never purchased a CD of her's, I've long appreciated just how sincere and compassionate she seems in her dealings with others. For some reason, listening to her sing and chat brings a smile to my face, as it did again last night.

When Larry asked Dolly about how she feels about being in the tabloids so frequently, she responded by saying that she reads the tabloids herself and figures that everything in them is true except the stuff about her--classic! As my wife, stepson and I listened to the interview and watched the bumper music, intercut with scenes from her movies 9 to 5 and The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, I was reminded of just what an incredibly multi-faceted entertainer she is.

The song posted above, "Why'd You Come In Here Lookin' Like That?," is from her fiftieth(!) album White Limozeen (the misspelling is intentional). It is a great example of a "Dolly tune" that seem to come straight out from the heart of an ingrained the Smoky Mountains sensibility (the preservation of which is just one of Dolly's causes) that marks her music as pure ol' fashioned Americana.

Breathe in, breathe out… YOU AND I ARE ALIVE!
