Spaghetti squash? Watermelon? Summer Squash? Invasion of the Body Snatcher's pod? Something is definitely taking shape and I have a feeling a definite identification is on the horizon...
Previously (here and here) I had suggested that it might have helped folks online to assist in the identification of my garden’s mystery vegetable if I had taken photographs of the veggie in question with a ruler next to it. (You know... "see how it grows.") Being a teacher, with no less then three school aged children in his house, you would think I would be able to find a 12-inch ruler pretty easily… guess again! After searching through their desks and my own boxes of stored school supplies, and coming up with zero rulers, I figured I would offer some size perspective using my ole’ foot, which is about twelve inches in length.Judging from my foot I would say the vegetables length, as of yesterday (August 14) is approximately 8" in length and 3" in diameter at its largest point.
Stage 1: The first appearance, from deep within the compost pile...

Stage 2: Boom, baby... there's a big plant from outta nowhere!

Stage 3: The beginnings of a flower which suggests that there might be some weird vegetable-thing about to take shape...

Stage 4: It's getting greener with distinct lines running the length of the vegetable...

Stage 5 is at the top of the post: final guesses, anyone? I for one hope it's not one of those "body pod things," although it would explain my apprehension around sleeping...
Breathe in, breathe out... YOU AND I ARE ALIVE!

Hmmmm... definately a body snatcher pod. My weird one ended up being just a spaghetti squash - just green on the outside, but it tasted the same. Yours here is now completely puzzling to me. :)
nice post :)
I just wanted to say, "hi" from a fellow RBF'er! I came across your blog on BE.
just got my vote at BOTB..a lot of credits were at stake !!
If memory serves me, I believe you have watermelon growing in your compost pile. (I used to grow them when I had a big garden.)
Beautiful pics and nice post!

I'm gonna go with watermelon. When you find out what it is, post and tell us too. Maybe you discovered some new hyrbrid, like a squashamelon (ewww, I don't think that would taste too good).
