Yesterday was my stepson, Greg's, first Modified Track and Field meet. His school, a private Jesuit school just outside city limits, was pitted against one of the smaller less well established programs in our city. The weather was miserable, especially in light of the fantastic weather we had been experiencing earlier. These two elements combined for a drubbing of the other school by my stepson's school, though you wouldn't have noticed the degree of it by the excellent sportsmanship demonstrated by his school. Personally, he ran very well, running lead-off for the 4 x 200m relay and the 400m Dash. Both schools had relatively small teams (I am used to the almost eighty kids on the team I coach with three other adults), and, interestingly to me and [probably no one else, certain events we run in the suburban ,meets are not run in the "City-Catholic League" meets, like the 55m hurdles.
I was a little disappointed in the city school team, not so much because they performed so poorly, but the manner in which they did so, walking nearly every event from the 100m on up. Worse yet, the coaches didn't appear to offer much support to the athletes, who pretty clearly to this observer, seemed to very disinterested, particularly when it became clear they were running against kids who practice. A lot.
A was very impressed with Greg's times, and even more so when I compared them to those of my students, who don't practice (and are not nearly as disciplined) as his team. Looks like we have something to work on in practice tomorrow!
Breathe in, breathe out… YOU AND I ARE ALIVE!
