Music Monday: "Look-Ka Py-Py"

I first heard The Meters while in college. At the time, there was a small record store on Main Street of the college town in which I attended undergraduate school. When I did manage to have a few extra bucks in my pocket, I would walk into town to buy either a book or an album. Look-Ka Py Py (1969), was one of the many vinyl records I would purchase on a lark or at the recommendation of the store owner. About fifteen years ago, I upgraded my copy to a cassette for easier listening while cruising around, and a few years ago I purchased a CD.

The only vinyl recordings I do have left are primarily audio poetry anthologies on record from the seventies and eighties from school libraries I've worked at. When the school would make the decision to abandon vinyl in favor of CD, I would generally try to "rescue" a few choice recordings... no Meters records though!

While scanning the Wikipedia entry on the band, I was pleasantly surprised to see that Look-Ka Py Py (1969), the album on which the (mostly) instrumental song first appeared, was listed #218 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Who'd a thunk it?

Breathe in, breathe out… YOU AND I ARE ALIVE!
