Eight hours and about 500 miles into our trip to Wyoming, and we've been making good time cruising through Buffalo, New York on to Erie, Pennsylvania, by Cleveland, Ohio while finally rolling into Elkhart, Indiana for the night at around 8:00 p.m.
We lost a little time in Cleveland due to a three car pile up (everyone appeared to be okay, thank goodness), but otherwise, the ride has been going smoothly, and has been filled with some nice surpises.
As a nascient Major League Baseball Detroit Tigers fan, due primarily to my repsect for their mascot, Paws, and the fact that I have been carrying the majority of their pitching staff for two years on my Yahoo! Fantasy Baseball team, I have primarily followed the team via newsprint and the inetrenet. Whiel dirving through Ohio this evening I had a chance to catch some of their game (victory!) over the Cleveland Indians on the radio care of WKZO Radio out of Kalamazoo, Michigan. There is nothing quite like "homer" radio!
I also finally got around to more carefully reading House Made of Dawn by M. Scott Momaday. This book was actaully "acquired" by me while I was working in a correctional faiclity teaching lifeskills many moons ago. It attracted my attention due to its status as a Pulitzer Prize Winner, Native American themes and mystic imagery. I am only about 30 pages in, but with a ten hour leg tomorrow, I'm hoping to dig in further.
The "playlist" for our trip thus far has consisted of a lot of AM radio fare, as well as, a few CDs from home, some from my stepson's collection and a bunch from Anne's and mine. Today we listened to (in order with comment):
1)Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack by John Williams--I know John Williams is like a soundtrack arranging super-duper-star, but seriously, don't he and Lucas feel just a slight bit guilty selling this stuff like this movie's music is that much different from the other five soundtracks? Had I been driving rather than Anne, I fear I might have fallen asleep... on the positive tip, though, I wasn't driving and it was wonderful accompaniment to the book I was reading!
2) Supper's on the Table... Everybody Come In... by John McCutcheon--this folk artist came to my son's charter school to perform two benefit concerts over three years when they were raising money to build a playground. His music is real American roots stuff and the fact that he is a nice guy helps make it all the more sincere.
3) The Three Pickers by Doc Watson, Ricky Skaggs, Earl Scruggs--Anne and I caught the PBS special this was recorded during while on our honeymoon in the Shenandoah National Park. There is something purely American about this mountain music and the comradarie and joy these fellas must have felt while playing together comes through loud and clear. This makes me regret never learning to play an instrument...
It's late now and we have much to do tomorrow, so farewell from the road... for now.
Breathe in, breathe out... YOU AND I ARE ALIVE!
