During a recent Blog Battle on BlogExplosion, I competed with a very visually interesting and well-written blog called Miladysa. (As of this writing the "battle" is not complete, but I anticipate "losing"--I, too, would vote for her blog if I could.) What particularly interested me was the most recent post entitled "WBW--Mary Ann Bibby," which I gathered, from reading it, is part of Way Back Wednesday, a theme (I reckon) which some, actually many, bloggers pick up on weekly. What got me thinking was how much this writer knew about her family's history and how special that connection to the past must be.
Kind of by nature and nuture, I myself feel kind of like a history vulture... while I am aware of my mother's heritage (German and Italian) and my bio-dad's (Polish)background, too, but I don't feel a strong bond to any of them. It was not part of my childhood and other than to say I was raised as a Catholic, I have no childhood "allegainaces" ingrained in my psyche.
I miss not having had that, and as a result find myself drawn to other more exotic cultures (and sub-cultures) as areas of interest, while being unable to fully embrace any of them as mine...
I can't help but feel like I've missed out on something by not having this. I guess like most undefined (or unrefined) "mutts", without any group with which to identify, and more importantly, from which to draw a larger strength, I have instead elected to sample and explore small parts of the communities of peoples of which I am a part.
Thanks, Miladysa, I had not thought about this whole area in awhile, and, thanks to your post, now I will...
Breathe in, breathe out... YOU AND I ARE ALIVE!

Thank you so much for those kind words - I had no idea they were here and it was a most pleasant surprise.
Your post makes me wonder if your parents are alive and if perhaps you had 'roots' in one place when you were growing up?
My interest in my family history started because of my surname which is quite rare [although recently I understand it has become something of an expletive in Australia due to a certain DJ named Kyle!}
Both my parents have died and as I moved around quite a lot when I was younger I have no roots in one place so I think I try to compensate with the family research :]
