The Fall extracurriculars season is in full swing at our house. My daughter had a junior varsity soccer game last evening, my son had rec league soccer practice last night and a game this morning, and my step-son had his first YMCA soccer practice this afternoon. After my son's game in a neighboring suburb, I went with my wife to watch her son's practice and ended up coaching the team as the other volunteers had not played soccer before. I have a little experienec with the sport, but am no expert. When both my son and daughter were younger, I coached thier respective teams and while I was (am) not much of an athlete, I like the interaction with the kids and they, likewise, seem to respond pretty well to my efforts.
As previously mentioned, I have not been running the last few days, but I did, this afternoon, go for a jog with my wife. My stepson's school will be sponsoring and organizing a 5k sometime in late Spring and Anne would like to run in it. She went online and found a reasonably mapped out training schedule, which would permit her to do just that... finish a 5k! She has been at it for about a week, following the plan religiously, and in just the second time I have been out on the pavement with her, I have noticed a great improvement. It is not easy to commit to running at all, let alone competing in a 5k, especially when... running just isn't your "thing." Regardless of how folks "finish," I am always impressed to just see individuals have the courage to take on something that they do not normally attempt. I am glad to report that Anne is off to a great start!
Tomorrow, I will be running in the Bruegger's Bagel 5k Run with my daughter, for the second time. We also ran the same race together last year, and she, too, did well to finish in her first road race. The weatherfolks are calling for cool temps and (maybe) rain, so it should be a nice fall-like morning for a run!
Breathe in, breathe out... YOU AND I ARE ALIVE!
