Run (Treadmill): 3.5 miles in :28:10 mins. @ 11:30 a.m.

Equipment Data: 7.5 Avg. Speed, 0.7 Avg. Incline, 494 cals.

Pace--:08:00 per mile

The last official day of my week off from work (we're still on vacation on Monday, but that begins a new week), and I was greeted by a few of the reminders as to why I am not a huge fan of treadmill work at the YMCA.

Despite the relatively early hour, the treadmills were full when I arrived, but fortunately, one opened quickly as I hanged my shoes. Another reminder is the fact that there is very little monitoring of the "Cardio-Theater" by adults and so often (as was the case today), pre-teens tend to wander in, use the equipment and are generally a distraction.

I realize that I sound like a disgruntled old man, but it is clearly posted that kids under 18 are not permitted and as these two kids were by themselves, I can only assume that their guardian dropped them off at the Y without staying to supervise--this seems to be pretty common practice at my Y--there are always kids just hanging around.

I also understand that part of the mission of the YMCA is to offer such youth a place to hang out, but this "hanging out" should (presumably) be part of a larger mission of improving overall health... and not at the expense of other patrons. Given the current physical health of many of our city's youth, shouldn't there be some stronger more well organized activities?--but given the urban nature of our Y, maybe those opportunities are only for the wealthier, more well funded suburban YMCAs. Like the beautiful new super-Y just opened in a suburb of River City...

Embrassez votre été invincible!
