Weather Report: Cloudy, 35°F, 66% Humidity, Winds: From W @ 8 mph; feels like 29°F.Pre-Race Observations: This morning I will be participating in the Rochester Run/Walk for Health 5k, to benefit a local outreach center (run in cooperation with medical students from the University of Rochester) for those in the community who do not have their own health care. I have had a fairly productive two weeks of training (running, cycling, ballin') and feel prepared to give a good effort. (Also, my "good luck charm" er... wife, will be coming with me again today, too.)
Lately, however, immediately after waking up from a night's sleep, I feel like I've been beaten about the legs and lower back with a bat. Generally, as the morning turns to afternoon to evening, the discomfort dissipates and I feel much more, I don't know how to say it except to say that I feel "more well lubricated." This morning, in addition to a few cups of joe and a bowl of oatmeal, I am adding 15 minutes on my stationary bicycle at a slow-to-moderate pace as a means of loosening up in advance of getting to the event location and formally warming up. I'll let you know how it goes!
Cycling (Trainer): 10 mins. @ 8:40 a.m.
Also, there must be a sale on large volume orange t-shirts as the shirt I received with registration for this race is he third bright orange one I've received in the past five months. Breaking away from my time-honored superstition, I will actually be wearing the shirt today during the run... something I have never done before as I thought it bad luck. Truth is, how many times am i going to wear a bright orange t-shirt if not today during the run for which it is intended?
Post-Race Reflections: I didn't quite break the twenty minute mark as I had hoped, having to settle for :20:04 in what we were told at the start was a "5k-ish" course. Aerobically, I felt pretty good throughout, while my ankles and calves began aching at about the two mile mark. I wonder if the race had been later in the day if I might not have felt better?
At any rate, I just missed placing, coming in fourth in my age group and thirty second out of about two-hundred and fifty overall. There was much spirit and energy in the group of participants and the weather (which is forecast to deteriorate quickly over the next twenty-four hours) was quite amicable.
Breathe in, breathe out... YOU AND I ARE ALIVE!
