Reshaping Rochester 5k Race for Kids

Run: 3.1 miles in :29:00 min. @ 10:00 a.m.
Pace: 9:20 min./per mile avg.

Weather Report: Partly Cloudy, 84°F, 45% Humidity, Winds: From SW @ 4 mph; feels like 84°F.

Fear not, true believer , I haven't become so hungry for a win that I've resorted to running against 16 and under competition. Come to think of it, that is more likely a recipe for a poor finish rather than a victory...

Pre-Race Observations: This morning's Reshaping Rochester 5K Race for Kids (Ages 9-16), is a run/walk to promote youth fitness and benefit my stepson's school, the Genesee Community Charter School (GCCS) at RSMC (Rochester Museum and Science Center).

While parents and adults are invited to participate with thier children, they are unable to register to "race." I will be running with my stepson, Greg, in the race, just as I have on two previous occasions. This is the event he has been working toward and the reason for his having begun training.

The last time Gregory and I ran a 5k together (about a month ago at the Parkinson's Canal 5k) we finished in about :28:00 min, so today we are hopeful to improve upon his PR. The overall goal, though? To finish near the head of his class, of course!

Post-Race Reflections: The weather was much warmer than we had hoped at the start of the race, especially given what had been a cool(er) morning. The course winded down through the West side of the city along what had previously been the canal path. Gregory finished in just about :29:00 minutes, slightly slower than our previous time but fast enough to earn him 7th place overall and first place out of all participants from his school!

Anne volunteered prior to the race, and my son, Jack came along to offer moral support, too. The finish was just outside PAETEC Park, our city's two-year-old soccer stadium, which we had the chance to explore both before and after the run. A few pics also got snapped.

The first is of Mayor Bob Duffy, who stopped by to start the race.

Gregory beating me out as we made our way down the final 200 meters.

Parents, school staff, and volunteers stayed to congratulate the athletes on the culmination of six months preparation for the run.

Breathe in, breathe out... YOU AND I ARE ALIVE!

Love the idea of this race - gives me a good idea for our community.
