Temple Beth El 5k

Run: 3.1 miles in :20:25 min. @ 8:15 a.m.
Pace: 6:34 min./per mile avg.

Weather Report: Mostly Cloudy, 67°F, 81% Humidity, Winds: From SW @ 3 mph; feels like 67°F.

Pre-Race Observations: Fortunately for early birds like me, the Temple Beth El 5k marks the return of the early morning start time... I much prefer 8-9 a.m. starts to 11-noon ones.

Following this week's three(!), none of which I have really faced as competitive races, I will be amping up the distances for my next two races from 3-3.5 miles to 9-9.5 miles. The first of these will be the Powerbar Trail Race, which features both 4.5 and 9 mile options. But, enough about next week...

Today's 5k is conveniently located only one mile from my home which creates the opportunity for me to ride my bicycle there as a sort of built in warm-up. That is, if it doesn't rain prior to the race. Here in River City, we just went through the driest month in our history(May!), and would welcome any rain... and my vegetable garden would appreciate it even more!

I'm looking forward to running today as the course is actually one I'm familiar with as it covers the ground around Cobbs Hill... an area I've run both in high school and now middle age. Added bonus... I will have a better vision of where I am on the course which will hopefully permit me to better adjust my pace or... what the heck, I'll just try to "run fast" as my wife always suggests!

Post-Race Reflections: Following my wife's advice I went out fast against a very talented field of runner's. While I failed to place in my age group, I did manage to run (pretty) well and better some fine runner's with whom I've sparred with in the past. The run itself was very nicely organized and it was nice to run as part of the larger running community along with a smaller religious community that I am not as common with.

Breathe in, breathe out... YOU AND I ARE ALIVE!
