Journey to the Local H2O Source

"I believe that water is the only drink for a wise man."~Henry David Thoreau

Two days ago, I blogged about my desire to drink more water. Yesterday, Anne and I took a short roadie to a small festival in a neighoring county. On our retrun trip home, we stopped by the source from which H2O flows from our taps here in River City, Hemlock Lake.

Located in southeast Livingston County, Hemlock Lake is one of New York State’s famous finger lakes, a group of eleven elongated glacial lakes in west-central New York. The shoreline remains undeveloped with numerous places to get out and hike along the shore.

In the early 1900s, the City of Rochester acquired the land around them in order to secure its water supply. Today, the City owns 7,100 acres of land around the two lakes. A filtration plant at the north end of Hemlock Lake filters and purifies water before it is piped to Rochester.

Recreational use of Hemlock Lake is regulated by the City of Rochester Water Department. Fishing and boating are allowed by permit only. Boats may not exceed 16 feet in length and motors may not exceed 10 h.p. Check your watershed visitor permit for details. Annual permits can be obtained free of charge from a self-service booth at the north end of the Lake.

Breathe in, breathe out... YOU AND I ARE ALIVE!
