Raising The Manger, Part 2: Setting the Stage

Though the physical building has been in my family for almost thirty years, the setting our manger has found itself each year has varied. As a child, my mother would set the manger up every Christmas in our living room and use angle hair to give the "setting" a wintry feel. (At the time, this liberty with the Nativity story seemed to make sense given that the manger does have hints of green and snow.)

When my children were younger, and the manger found its way into my home, I would use fabric, with plastic bowls strategically placed beneath, to make a sand dune. This resulted in a sort of "Nativity Action Playset" vibe, enhanced by the fact that my daughter would move the figurines around and act out scenes. Back then it seemed almost natural to have the Pink Power Ranger racing lambs in the desert.

This afternoon I found myself at a craft store roaming the aisles for some inspiration. Eventually I settled on a simple piece of "camel-colored" felt to serve as the base on which the manger will be displayed. Though not the snow-kissed puffs of my youth, or the super-hero play land my daughter once powered through, this year's Nativity "setting" seemed in touch with the simpler approach my family and I had been trying to take with the holiday season this year.
