Winter Roadie to Portageville, NY

From white-outs to sunshine, drifting snow to sheets of ice... all these and more were ours to experience as Anne and I took the one hour-and-a-half drive to the Boy Scout Camp in rural Portageville, NY to pick up her son Gregory this morning. Though we did not go looking for it, we did anticipate certain dangers. When Anne had driven Greg out to camp by herself Friday evening, she was stuck in a ditch while attempting to drive out of the campsite. it was this experience that prompted me to accompany her this time.

I always enjoy exploring the back roads of our fine state, but I could have done without the harrowing white-outs during which we crawled down the road unaware of who or what was around us. Driving back, the snow had moved on, so it was odd to pass back through recently traveled area and having no sense of the surroundings.

Here is the area at which we parked the Prius, electing to walk down to camp rather than risk being stuck again.

Anne and I were only outside for about forty-five minutes. Here is Greg walking from the camp to meet us after spending the previous two nights outside.

Anne was smart to wear her "snowpants" and to tell me to dress more approaietly. Initially I was going to wear just hiking shoes... she was aboslutely right, though, I did need the boots!

It was a wonderful surprise to hear and see a few birds in the brush. I attempted to take a picture (and I'm sure it was in the screen), but I'll be darned if I can see it now!

Breathe in, breathe out… YOU AND I ARE ALIVE!
