Newbie Coach Musings: A Little More to Go On...

After meeting briefly with my fellow Modified Track and Field coaches this past Wednesday, I have a little bit of a better idea of just what I will be doing as part of the coaching team this season... at least in theory.

The concrete details regarding day-to-day plans and activities have still not materialized to my liking, but as the lowest-man-on-the -totem-pole, I don't really feel in a position to act on my coaching instincts; gut feelings that draw on my knowledge and experience as a teacher... primarily the desire to plan and have a plan prior to facilitating kids (athletes) through a "lesson."

The things I do know now that I did not before is that I will be working with Kim, our school's Varsity Indoor Track and Field coach this past Winter season, with students participating in the distance running, high jumping, and long jumping events.

The head coach, Mike, who also happens to be our high school's Varsity Girl's Basketball Team head coach, also has expressed a willingness to have we assistants offer suggestions and feedback, and though the management style of my physical education colleagues is a little less structured than I might like--I am looking forward to learning from these coaches who have found success in other sports and translate that into a fun and disciplined program for our middle schoolers.

Breathe in, breathe out… YOU AND I ARE ALIVE!
