"You wouldn't accidentally meet Mr. Scott because he's down a back road you'd never find even if lost. Get a glimpse into this rare person's existence -- no TV or computer, goats his best friends."
While perusing Youtube last evening I did the tragically standard exercise of searching under my own name (well, my online pseudonym at any rate) and came across the film above, made by Scott W. Webb, about a different "Mr. Scott."
Two things crossed my mind as I watched the ten minute documentary.
First, just how unfortunate it is that someone (well, other than Mr. Webb) is not feverishly capturing for austerity on video or tape the recollections and stories of those folks who are the more aged of our population. While President Bush describes "uniquely American" as the ability to work three jobs, I think that this Mr. Scott is uniquely "Americana" with a truly American perspective--one seemingly organically grown from the side of the Tennessee land on which he resides. It is sad to consider just how much is being lost as these folks pass on into their own personal histories leaving nothing behind.
Secondly, I marvel at the peacefulness this man emanates, despite what I think most would call (at best) extremely rustic lifestyle. There might be something to be said about an isolated, serene existence.
But, no computer...?
Breathe in, breathe out… YOU AND I ARE ALIVE!
