Run: 2.6 miles in :22:00 min. @ 2:30 p.m.
Weather: Cloudy, 32°F, 58% Humidity, Wind: NE @ 8 mph; feels like 27°F.
Pace: 8:30 min/mile.
Course: A short run through the suburban streets behind the school at which I work.
This afternoon I had actually convinced a couple of lads to go out with me for a (very) short run prior to practice officially beginning. Unfortunately, two of them were seduced away from the run by the siren call of pizza, care of the girl's cross-country team who had coincidentally been holding it post-season "party" directly after school.
The lad who ultimately did volunteer to escort me through a quick tour of the streets behind our school ran at (what I thought) was a fairly quick pace, and the ache in my knees, hip(!) served as a reminder that I am not as once (nor in as good of shape) as I once was. These past few weeks away from serious training (and honestly the two weeks leading up to the "break" saw my mileage dwindle considerably) have contributed to my not being anywhere near what I would normally pass off as "racing shape."
Ironically, I just signed up to participate in two separate Winter season series, one a series of road races of varying distances and a second which will be evening snowshoe races of about a 5k-ish distance. At least I am becoming more comfortable with the reality (at least when my time is at a minimum) of being a recreational runner... wait, come to think of it, that is what I've really been all along... and it's okay be me!
