High School Team Solo Training Run

Run: 2.5 miles in :25:00 min. @ 2:30 p.m.
Weather: Light Rain, 42°F, 65% Humidity, Wind: SSE @ 9 mph; feels like 36°F.
Pace: A very e-z pace, due to the fact that I was looking for some athletes and the footing (especially on the road ways) was icy and challenging.
Course: A short "jog" (ugh!) in the streets surrounding my school on which the distance runners reportedly train.

In an effort to get a better sense of what the distance runners on our Indoor Track and Field team are doing when they leave campus (pictured to the right in much nicer weather!) to run (I know how long they leave for and at what pace we wish them to run on any given day, I'm just uncertain as to how much effort they are putting into the runs), I went prior to practice to explore some of the streets in the surrounding neighborhood.

A colleague of mine told me at the beginning of the season that "we get paid to teach and coach , not to train. If you are running with kids that leaves a larger number (who aren't distance runners) behind who still need your guidance." His point was a very valid one, so I have deiced to attempt to use the hour prior to practice to check out some routes with the athletes who begin early, due to other commitments or just a desire to get out before the weather turns too challenging.

At any rate, after conferring with the crossing guard at the main drag outside the school--she'd seen the kids leave about fifteen minutes before I--I went about attempting to follow the course (as I knew it), but had little luck in actually tracking them down. The run did give me a better view of the community in which some of my students reside and a stronger lay of the land.

In the end, as personal training runs go, it was weak, but as an information gathering excursion, it was vlaubel.
