"Today's Reading Rainbow books are..."

Quite often this summer, during the daytime, I have found myself checking in on our local Public Broadcasting Station (PBS) television station, WXXI. One show that I have continued to develop a fondness for, (although I did not watch it too much while a member of its intended audience) is Reading Rainbow, part of the PBS Kids programming.

Hosted by LeVar Burton (of Roots and Star Trek: TNG), Reading Rainbow is targeted at elementary school students with the intention of cultivating a love of reading by introducing them to many different titles and genres. Each episode presents books, as well as, a book-ending "story,' all of which focuses on a specific theme. The books which are shared with viewers are read and reviewed by kids, from their (a child's) perspective.

I'm not quite sure of the shows availability outside of the United States, so for those who are unfamiliar with this wonderful show, or have just had little reason to check it out, here's a brief "textbook" synopsis of the show:
Now in its 24th season, READING RAINBOW has received enthusiastic international acclaim, garnering more than 150 awards, including 20 Emmys (eight for "Outstanding Children’s Series"), a prestigious Peabody, eight CINE Golden Eagles, seven Parent’s Choice Awards, and three international Prix Jeunesse Awards. The NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) has twice honored LeVar Burton for his role on READING RAINBOW with their Image Award.
If you have children, haven't watch it in a while, have never checked it out, I would strongly recommend catching an episode, or two. It's positive, loving spirit can be infectious...

Breathe in, breathe out... YOU AND I ARE ALIVE!
