July Fourth

The grave of Charles D. Howell who died at the Battle of Fredericksburg during the American Civil War. The grave site is located at the Mt. Hope Cemetery in Rochester, New York.

Today, the Fourth of July, Anne and I took our dog, Gracie, for a walk at the Mt. Hope Cemetery. This has been a practice of ours with the dog for many years, and today, with no other plans in the offing, seemed as good a day as any to continue the tradition. While on our walk, we noticed that a number of grave sites had been adorned with small American flags in recognition of the deceased contributions to freedmon. Among them was the grave marker pictured above.

I attempted to do some research on the The Friends of Mt. Hope Cemetery website, but apparently our friend Mr. Howell did not warrant a longer biography. Unfortunately, had I thought far enough in advance, I'd have written down the location of the grave site for anyone interested.

Breathe in, breathe out… YOU AND I ARE ALIVE!
