My Green Toe: Summer Turns to Fall and at Last... Eggplant!

"No two gardens are the same. No two days are the same in one garden."~Hugh Johnson
As September slowly turns to October, and the cool weather approaches, it is time to once again check in with the progress of our small urban vegetable garden. Since last April (pictured to the left), when the area was tilled and prepared, Anne and I have been trying to grow cherry tomatoes, tomatoes, green peppers, yellow peppers and eggplant. We have come this far having achieved varying levels of agricultural success.

The current state of the garden (pictured to the right) is showing signs of both passing on, as illustrated by the dying tomato plants in the foreground, and forging ahead. We have been patiently waiting to harvest an eggplant, and while we have been teased by flowers and some small fruits, it was only today, as Anne was checking the garden, that we had an eggplant worthy of picking (pictured below)...

While this is the sole product of the six eggplant plantings placed in the earth months ago, there is a feeling of satisfaction that comes with picking one fruit and knowing that even though the harvest was not plentiful, it was a success, of sorts.

Breathe in, breathe out... YOU AND I ARE ALIVE!
