Gracie's Crate is (was?) one such blog. I had started the blog as a tribute to our family dog and had hoped to post a picture a day of her doing stoopid pet stuff. It didn't last long... now much later, I'm resurrecting the idea as a "sub blog" of this one.Sitting here, sick and unhappy, I am easily reminded of why I love this animal, and brought back to when we first thought of having her join our family...
When Anne and I were first considering getting a family dog (about four years ago), we thought about few different possible breeds before settling on either an English Springer Spaniel (ESS) or Irish Setter. Anne had owned two Irish Setter's previously (Devon and Logan), but I preferred the idea of (maybe) having a English Springer Spaniel, I reckon, because the breed "ran" a little smaller and the idea of a slightly smaller pup was appealing. I fell in love with the idea of an ESS after visiting the home of a local lady who had previously purchased two dogs from the same breeder we were considering. When we went to her home, I was amazed at the character and personality her Springer's showed, each having a distinct persona. One behavior that stayed with me after our visit was how much the dogs liked to lay at one's feet, in fact ON your foot... just how close they liked to be to you.
As I sit here recovering from a cold and feeling kind of surly, having Gracie saunter over and lay on my foot (as pictured above to the right) brings me a sense of closeness... I guess I'm becoming one of those weird dog people...

I too am a weird dog people and it's a good thing to be.
Lovely dog.
Someone once dropped a SS near our house and I soon began to love that dog. One day, after being gone for days, she came home with a hind leg torn off from an accident on the Interstate. It was gangrenous and I knew I had to put her down.
That's the only and last dog I ever shot. Could never do that again.
Yup. Gotta love those weird dog people. Count me in. Love the picture! We had a dog--a Labrador Retriever run from Belfast, where I used to live--named Cuchulainn who always sat on my mother-in-law's foot. She is not one of those weird dog people, but she never minded and she never moved. The dog was determined to move her into a whole new realm of experience, and he did. He actually got to her heart over time! Do you think they like our feet for some reason?
Dogs have a way of winning us over with their antics.
I think they like our feet because they're close to the ground. If we walked on our hands, they'd sit by our hands ;-)
Thanks for all the great comments! gracie (and I) didn't realize how many fellow "dog-kooks" (and we mean that in a complimetary way!) there were out here...
Please stop by again!
Mehhh...no such thing as a weird dog person :) I've got a husky/wolf/lab mix and he's my absolute treasure. I baby him, treat him like a member of the family, post photos of him on my blog, talk about him as though he were our child, and keep puppy photos of him in my wallet.
Gah...maybe I am a weird dog person! LOL!
Great blog, btw! :)
