Newbie Coach Musings: Pre-Season Jitters Revealed!

After last week's mild snafu, I am (relatively) sure that this afternoon after school I will have my first meeting with the other coaches with whom I will be coaching my school's Modified Track & Field Team. It's been a few week's since I completed my Red Cross trainings and was approved by the school board for the position (a "rubber-stamp" to be sure), and I continue to have mixed feelings of anxiousness and nervousness about the whole affair.

I'm hoping that once things get rolling, which is to say once I actually have a stronger sense as to just what events I'll be working with, how many students will be on the team, and what an actual practice "looks" like, I'll be much more comfortable. The folks with whom I'm coaching are all experienced at a varsity level in a variety of sports, so I feel confident that I'll be able to learn much from them. Additionally, I have a few colleagues who have coached this sport at a number of levels who have offered to lend me assistance in preparing workouts, regardless of what events I am given responsibility for.

My approach? Stay relaxed, follow the directions and trust the experts... which seems to be a sensible approach to many endeavors, including the marathon training plan I'm currently involved with...

Breathe in, breathe out… YOU AND I ARE ALIVE!
